Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is a place of profound natural and cultural significance and its rugged landscape holds a millennia of traditional knowledge. Photographers, filmmakers, media and artists travel from across the world to capture the iconic views of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

The Media Industry Guidelines are in place to help photographers, filmmakers, media and the tourism industry work on and use images of the park for commercial purposes, while balancing the responsibility of Anangu traditional owners over their land and respect for Tjukurpa (cultural law, knowledge and values).

True North was engaged to consult with traditional owners and review the guidelines to meet current media needs and technology.

The extensive consultation process included investing time with senior Anangu traditional owners to understand their values, aspirations and concerns, interviewing key stakeholders from across the media, arts and tourism industries and conducting workshops to bring together key stakeholders, parks staff and Anangu.

Outcomes

  • consulted 18 key stakeholder groups during more than 60 meetings and four workshops
  • worked with stakeholders to understand their values and needs to inform and write the guidelines
  • developed all-encompassing guidelines that are accessible for all groups while maintaining and protecting Tjukurpa
  • partnered with local Territory designers to ensure the design of the guidelines captured the essence of the park
